Queensland Coal Miners Laid Off
More than 150 workers at a Queensland mine were made redundant yesterday, with half the job losses blamed on an inability to ship coal because of infrastructure bottlenecks.
Workers at Coppabella Mine, which lies 100km inland from Mackay, are to be laid off on August 31 because of a "need to reduce coal tonnages for the rest of the year", according to Australian news sources.
The Queensland workers are employed by contract miner EDI Mining, owned by Macarthur Coal.
