Rescuers Find No Sign of US Miners

10 August 2007 16:09

Rescue crews in the US have drilled into a deep chamber where six miners have been trapped in a collapsed Utah coal mine since Monday but have heard no sound through a microphone lowered into the cavity.

A nine-inch hole is being drilled to insert a camera into the cavity, but the team say it will take another four to five days to reach the miners.

Hearing no sound from the mine should not be interpreted as bad news according to a mine rescue coordinator speaking to US reporters at the site.

Officials have said the men could potentially survive for weeks in an underground chamber if they were not killed by the initial collapse.
