US Miners Trapped by Cave-In

07 August 2007 12:52

Rescue crews worked through the night to find six miners trapped 1,500ft underground after a coal mine collapsed in central Utah in the US.

The workers became trapped on Monday night at Crandall Canyon Mine near central Utah, about 140 miles south of Salt Lake City – an area known for its mining industry.

According to US reports the mine caved with such force that geologists are investigating whether it accounted for an earthquake registered nearby around the same time.

12 miners were killed in an explosion at International Coal Group's Sago mine in West Virginia last year. In response the US Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act.
