BHP, Xstrata and Anglo to invest $1.3bn in Colombian mine

BHP Billiton, Xstrata and Anglo American have formed a joint venture to invest $1.3bn in the expansion of the Cerrejón coal mine in La Guajira, Columbia.

The expansion is expected to increase the salable coal production and export capacity of the mine from 32Mtpa to 40Mtpa by 2015.

The scope of work will include increasing coal production and coal handling capacity at the Cerrejón mine, and coal handling and ship loading capacity at its Puerto Bolivar port, including the construction of an additional loading berth.

The construction is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2011 and complete in 2013.
