Deeper and Down: Advances in Mine Hoist Technology

Date
05 Feb 2009

Abstract

Mine hoists are rightly regarded as the lifelines of underground mines, transporting crushed ore to the surface and conveying mine workers and their equipment up and down the shaft.

Naturally, the performance and safety of these systems is critical to mining operations, since they help determine productivity and hence profitability. In recent years, the drive toward ever-improving efficiency and reliability has led to significant changes in their design and technology.

What’s more, the need to exploit far deeper mineral resources has provided further engineering challenges. As one of the companies that pioneered the latest generation of deep mining hoists in North America, DavyMarkham is well placed to review the technological changes, especially as one of its corporate forerunners, Markham & Co, was actually amongst the earliest manufacturers of mine winders.
