SAFEmine Soution Report: Increasing Safety on Mine Access Roads

11 June 2012 by SAFEmine

Blind corners, darkness, fog, heavy snow, and bridges on a single lane road - these are some of the challenges faced by employees traveling and hauling material to and from Hecla's Greens Creek Mine in Alaska.

SAFEmine collision avoidance and traffic awareness technology was selected for this application. Using GPS to determine vehicle position, speed, and heading, vehicle locations and paths are calculated and sent via a radio link to all other outfitted vehicles in the area. Two main functions are provided: traffic awareness that shows where other vehicles are located, and collision warning that predicts if the paths of two or more vehicles will converge, resulting in audible and visual warnings to the driver(s) causing the dangerous situation.
