NCS Engineering - Failsafe Braking Systems

NCS Engineering is a specialist manufacturer and supplier of failsafe braking systems to the mining industry in South Africa. The company is a division of Compaction Technology (Pty) Ltd, a global leader in ground improvement.

NCS Engineering is a certified ISO9001 2000 organisation and is currently on a strong drive towards a global presence.

NCS Engineering has the capability of developing new braking systems for specific applications and will look at different opportunities that match our core technology.

THE MAXIM-B® FAILSAFE BRAKING SYSTEM PRODUCT RANGE

The Maxim-B® range of failsafe braking systems are sealed liquid cooled brakes working on the principle of oil shear between stationary and rotating friction discs to provide the necessary braking force. In general, the units have separate hydraulic applied service and spring applied failsafe brake pistons working on a common friction disc pack. A reverse modulated (SAHR - Spring Applied, Hydraulic Release) braking system for different applications is also available.

L500 SERIES - LHD / ADT BRAKING SYSTEM

This braking system was originally designed for fitment onto an LHD or ADT, either fitted to the differential or the axle wheel end. The brakes can be supplied with either two, three, four, five or six disc configurations and with either standard or uprated disc springs, depending on the brake torques required by the vehicle. A reverse modulated L500 series braking system is available as an alternative as well.

S300 SERIES - SHUTTLE CAR BRAKING SYSTEM

This braking system was originally designed for fitment to the electric motor gear reduction boxes of shuttle cars or the differential of an LHD or ADT. As with the L500 series, the brakes can be supplied in various configurations, depending on the brake torques required by the vehicle.

U300 SERIES - UTILITY VEHICLE / TRAILER BRAKING SYSTEM

This braking system was originally designed for slower moving vehicles (typically trailers) ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 kg, with forced cooling made available for faster moving vehicles. The brakes are compact enough to be fitted on prop shafts and inside standard wheel rims. A reverse modulated U300 series braking system is available as an alternative as well.

C200 SERIES - BRAKING FOR COMMERCIAL / SUPPORT VEHICLES

This braking system was originally designed for commercial vehicles that need to be used underground. The Toyota Landcruiser would be a typical weight and load carrying capacity commercial vehicle example, used extensively as a maintenance support vehicle and personnel carrier. The restriction for the vehicle is that it would not be capable of travelling at speeds exceeding 40kmh, which, in most worldwide underground mining applications, would be more than acceptable. A reverse modulated C200 braking system (with failsafe) has been developed, allowing a brake to be fitted on all four wheel ends and thus allowing the vehicle to travel at faster speeds.

OTHER PRODUCTS

NCS Engineering has undertaken several specialised conversions for customers requiring the Maxim-B principles to be incorporated on existing plant and equipment. Typical customisations, amongst many others, include the conversion inboard air applied spring release service axle brakes and the conversion from dry disc caliper brakes.

QUALITY AND RELIABILITY

The mining industry's requirements of highest quality and reliability and lowest possible maintenance costs are integral to the braking system design which has proven very effective and efficient in harsh working environments in South Africa. The entire product range is subjected to rigorous quality control during the manufacturing and assembly stages of the process, with final dynamic and static testing also forming part of the certification process.
