Corporate Health Professionals - Health and Safety Services for the Mining Industry

Corporate Health Professionals provide a full range of occupational health and safety services to mining companies including: mobile and safety services, noise surveys, full audiological assessments, mine health certificates, hearing tests and hazard or safety training.

LEGISLATED ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

1. In 1991 the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act (1981) was amended to allow compensation for work related noise induced hearing loss. As a consequence all workers who work in a noisy environment must undergo baseline hearing tests. This test must be arranged and paid for by the employer.

These Baseline tests form the benchmark against which future compensation is calculated and hence are very important for the protection of the interests of both the employer and the workers. All workers who have already had a Baseline test may choose, or the employer may arrange, to have a Subsequent test every 12 months. In so doing the employee and the employer gain the valuable opportunity to manage the risk of hearing loss and the resultant expense of compensation claims and possible legal action.

2. Employers also have a legal obligation to know and manage the extent of noise to which their employees and contractors are exposed. Noise surveys are unobtrusive, effective and the only way to determine noise levels in the workplace.

3. The 1995 Mine Safety and Inspection Act requires all individuals working on mine site or processing operations to undergo a specific health assessment to attain a 'Mine Health Certificate' as a part of Department of Consumer & employee Protection's mine workers health surveillance (MWHS) program. These certificates require renewal every 5 years.

MOBILE AND SAFETY SERVICES

Can you come to us? Yes. We are able to provide our full range of services to any of your sites*.
*Our fully accredited mobile facility, that provides our qualified WorkCover Hearing Test services, is only limited to sites accessible by bitumen road and cost effectiveness.

Does your mobile facility ever come to...? Upon request, we can go anywhere accessible by road. We also target areas of Western Australia on a regular or routine basis including the Pilbara and Kimberley regions at least once a year.

PRESCRIBED NOISY WORKPLACE

Do we have a "prescribed noisy work environment"? WorkCover defines a 'prescribed noisy workplace' as one that exposes workers to 90dB over an eight hour period, or equivalent. Equivalent refers to the fact that for every 3dB above 90dB the time allowed is halved.

"How much is 90dB?" is often the next question. The only way of measuring accurately is to have a noise survey of your work environment(s). In fact, employers are required by Worksafe to know how much noise they expose their employees to. However, to give you a rough guide, 90dB is about the same noise as a domestic vacuum cleaner. Remembering the time factor, for someone who works with metal grinders, guns or jet aeroplanes, where the noise levels are well in excess of 100dB, allowable time frames can be measured in a few seconds. Remember, noise can do serious and irreparable damage in less than a few seconds.

FULL AUDIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS

Can you provide full audiological assessments? Yes. We can provide Workcover full audiological assessments from three Perth locations, one Bunbury location, and periodically in the Pilbara and Kimberley. Upon request we can also provide services onsite anywhere in the state from our fully accredited mobile facility.

MINE HEALTH CERTIFICATES

Do you do mine health certificates? Yes. Just ring and ask for a quote. Again, our mobile facility, with a Department of Consumer Employment Protection Approved Testers, can even come to your site to make testing all your employees the least expensive process available.

HEARING TESTS

Do we have to provide hearing tests for our workers? If the work environment you provide your employees is a 'prescribed workplace' (is noisy - see above), then yes. If you have contractors on your worksites for extended periods, you also have some responsibility to them. Please call CHP head office, or WorkCover, if you have doubts in this area.

HAZARD OR SAFETY TRAINING

Can you provide hazard or safety training for our workers? Yes. We already have a range of short hazard awareness and education programs to help you meet your (Worksafe) legislated 'Duty of Care' requirements.
