HAULMAX - Extended Distance Off-Highway Haulers

Manufactured in Australia, the Haulmax® heavy-duty truck range is the culmination of 20 years of experience and research into the haulage industry and specifically, the requirements of long-distance, off highway, bulk haulage vehicles.

Extended haulage for mining satellite pits

With mining companies opening satellite pits located more than 10km from the processing plant or rail line, the cost of hauling material is becoming a major issue. The haul range of the large rigid dump truck is usually restricted to around 5km, so in response to that limitation, road-trains (usually being a big on-highway truck pulling two or three trailers) are presenting as an answer.

However, the combination of rough haul roads and the often required mix of components, can make servicing at remote sites much more tedious, further resulting in excessively high maintenance costs.

Built to reach satellite pits with extended haulage distances upwards of 50 kilometre cycles, the Haulmax 3900 Series truck, specifically designed for off highway haul roads, is the answer.

Off-highway mining trucks

The Haulmax off-highway truck is offered in three configurations:

  • A dump truck with a payload of 80-85 tonnes
  • A 150t - 190t capacity low bed / road float
  • A trailer unit with a payload of 130t -135t, presenting the ideal base for the mounting of service modules, fuel tanks or water carts

Extended haulage does not limit the unit to just being a prime mover of bulk materials, it also lends itself to the variety of tasks often demanded by a highly productive mine site.

Narrow profiles for haul road construction

A significant benefit of the Haulmax narrow profile, nominally 4.2m (165 in) over the body, equates to a haul road width of some 13m (42ft). When compared to a similar capacity dump truck, which requires road widths of 18.3m (60ft), an immediate cost saving on haul road construction of 28%-30% can be expected.

Further driving down the cost per tonne, simply put, narrower roads cost considerably less to build and maintain, and the longer the distance, the larger the saving.

Mining trucks with Caterpillar integrated technology

Further enhancements of the 3900 truck design include dual rear-wheel drive. This allows for a braking surface area of some 100,568cm² (15,568in²), offering unsurpassed retardation, especially ideal for long downhill loaded hauls. Furthermore, it offers excellent traction and surefootedness in soft underfoot conditions and very wet operations.

Each Haulmax 3900 Series truck features a complete Caterpillar® powertrain, including a high-torque Cat® C27 ACERT™ low emissions engine, a seven-speed power shift transmission, oil-cooled multiple wet disc brakes on both rear-drive axles and 21.00 x 35 Radial tyres.

Haulmax works closely with Caterpillar to ensure the computer-matched powertrain components optimise longevity, reliability and mechanical availability.

Mining trucks with increased steering angle

The 3900 series also has an increased steering angle to 31º allowing for improved turning. Nitrogen-over-oil suspension cylinders on each of the front wheels provide independent front suspension and dual cylinders to each of the rear axles allow excellent stability, traction and ride.

Operator comfort for mining trucks

Operator comfort is further enhanced by an air-suspension seat and a quieter cab with an interior sound level of only 73.9dB(A), thanks to improved cab lining. Operator cabs are ROPS / FOPS compliant, and incorporate a second passenger seat. Haulmax’s operator cabs offer excellent visibility, spaciousness and safety, with three-point seat belts as standard.
