A hydrodynamic coupling (fluid coupling) in the driveline has many positive characteristics. Positive features such as smooth starting, load-free motor run-up and torque limitation are widely known.

Another characteristic, i. e. the damping of torsional vibrations in the driveline, often receives less attention, although it is a highly beneficial feature. It reduces the load on the drive components and hence increases their service life. There are even applications where the damping of torsional vibrations through the fluid coupling is the main argument for their installation. A good example are marine drives with high outputs.

On the subject of torsional vibration calculations, you can now download or order a new special publication from the Voith Turbo website.
