Terex SHM

Terex SHM - Complete Highwall Mining System

Terex SHM provides highwall mining equipment to some of the world's foremost operators. It is the first practical highwall mining system capable of mining parallel entries to pre-determined depths, while linking surface and underground operations to maximize coal recovery and profits.

SURFACE MINING SYSTEM

Cost-effective and safe, the surface mining system ensures that crew members do not need to go underground, thereby minimizing risk to the workforce. The Terex SHM works before a highwall. However, unlike auger mining systems, the Terex SHM mines parallel entries, rectangular in section and up to 1,000ft or 305m deep.

The highwall miner can also be fitted with interchangeable cutterhead modules that enable mining of coal seams ranging from 30in to 16ft in thickness.

This superior surface mining system yields the following benefits:

  • High annual capacity
  • Lower per ton reclamation costs
  • Higher coal recovery
  • Lower total coal production costs
  • Minimal out-of-seam ash dilution

THE TEREX SHM HIGHWALL MINER

When preparing to mine, the mobile Terex SHM highwall miner is aligned perpendicular to the coal face exposed by the surface mining operation. Four hydraulically powered tracks ensure the mobility of the highwall miner. As mining begins, the coal is cut by a specially designed electric cutterhead module, of which several modules are available to match the seam conditions.

The cutterhead is attached to the powerhead assembly located in the center of the highwall miner. Here, two hydraulically powered sump cylinders, with a 20ft stroke, push the powerhead forward as they provide up to 380,000lbs of force.

Electric power is introduced into the machine through the Electric Control Module (ECM) located below the operator cabin; 995V, 480V, 220V and, 110V are available throughout the machine.

Terex SHM system advantages include:

  • The Superior Highwall Mining system can mine coal seams ranging from 30in to 16ft
  • Penetration depths over 1,000ft are possible
  • Rigid pushbeam design with PLC controlled sump forces allows for more consistent and accurate cutting depths
  • Modular design allows the system to be moved easily from pit to pit
  • Current systems are successfully mining 40,000 to 100,000 plus tons per month depending on the coal seam height
  • Three to four man crews keep labor costs low
  • Up to 70% of in place coal can be recovered using the Terex SHM system
  • Enclosed pushbeam conveyor eliminates external ash dilution from the roof
  • Ability to operate on contour benches as narrow as 42ft
  • Technical support assuring Terex SHM availability is provided
  • Assistance in designing mine plans for highwall mining can be provided

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC)

Utilizing evolved coal mining technology, the highwall miner’s control center consists of a Siemens' Step 7 computerized PLC with a monitor and touch pad, which allows the operator to bring up a series of screens on the monitor. Using the touch pad, the operator may adjust virtually any function on the machine.

The onboard Siemens' PLC continuously monitors machine operation and will display and direct the operator to any potential system failures. Of special safety importance is the methane-sensing monitor, which reads methane levels, if any, around the cutterhead. This monitor will automatically cut off all power to the cutterhead in the event that methane levels are detected at ignitable levels. gamma detector.

GAMMA MINING RADIATION DETECTOR

Another innovation on the Terex SHM highwall miner is the gamma detector. The gamma detector measures increasing radiation as the cutterhead nears the radioactive rock. With the gamma detector assisting the operator, rock and other debris can be left underground resulting in cleaner coal. The gamma detector is enclosed inside rugged armor that is mounted on the front of the cutterboom to view behind the cutterdrum.

TEREX SHM MINING SUPPORT SERVICE

In addition to manufacturing one of the world’s most sophisticated and efficient highwall mining systems in the coal mining industry, Terex SHM engineers also provide 24-hour technical support to mine operators including assistance in designing mine plans. They will work with owners to evaluate the coal seam, estimate production costs, and train your personnel to operate and maintain the highwall miner. Terex SHM product support is also available to provide spare part support around the clock.

Terex SHM takes great pride in its commitment to providing both exceptional customer service and the highest quality highwall mining system in the world. Terex SHM was especially pleased to become one of the few coal-related West Virginia manufacturers to have achieved ISO 9001-2000 certification.
