Olex - Power Cables

Olex (a Nexans company) is one of the world’s largest and most technically advanced manufacturers of power cables, with more than 65 years' experience in cable production in Australia. Olex manufactures cables for the Australian and Asian Pacific energy, construction and industrial markets with a variety of low and high voltage mining, industrial, commercial and domestic cable solutions.

Now with the global resources of the world’s leading cable company, Nexans, behind it, Olex is even better positioned to provide high quality cables and expertise.

POWER CABLES FOR THE AUSTRALASIAN MINING INDUSTRY

Olex is a world leader in the design and manufacture of cables for mining and specialises in a range of reeling and trailing cables that meet Australia’s specific needs in accordance with local standards based on providing improved safety for workers and machinery. The quality and toughness of these products make them much sought after in the arduous conditions of remote mining.

Utilising global expertise and experience, but designed and tested for local conditions and applications, all our products are supported by the local service, advice and know-how that has made Olex Australia’s number one cable provider.

UNDERGROUND COAL MINE POWER CABLES

Reeling and trailing cables manufactured to AS/NZS 1802 are robust, flexible cables designed for underground coal mines. They include:

  • Type 209 screened cable for general power supply
  • Type 210 for power supply to portable equipment
  • Type 275 reeling cable for use on shuttle car
  • Type 240 for general power supply including three pilots
  • Type 241 (and Type 241 Superflex) for power supply to continuous miners
  • Type 245 for supply to longwall machines and suitable for use in cable chain
  • Type 260 armoured cable for use where physical strength and protection are required

HEAVY-DUTY REELING AND TRAILING CABLES

Reeling and trailing cables manufactured to AS/NZS 2802 are also robust and flexible cables, but are designed for use other than in underground coal mine applications. These comprise two categories. Class 1 are designed with thinner insulation and sheath when compared with Class 2 cables of the equivalent size and voltage to enhance general handling characteristics. Many of these are suitable for other applications requiring a heavy-duty flexible cable, such as underground metalliferous mines, ore handling areas and wharf cranes.

  • Type 409 Class 2 trailing cable for power supply to draglines, shovels and drills
  • Type 412 Class 2 trailing armoured cable for use where physical strength and protection are required, particularly suitable for sand mining operations
  • Type 440 Class 2 for general power supply including three pilots
  • Type 441 Class 1 reeling and trailing cable for power supply to draglines, shovels and drills, where the metallic screens are not required
  • Type 450 Class 1 trailing cable with metallic screens for power supply to draglines, shovels and drills, and used for reeling on stackers, reclaimers, and wharf cranes
  • Type 455 Class 1 reeling cable without metallic screens for power supply to stackers, reclaimers, and wharf cranes

The reeling and trailing cables to the two Australian standards (1802 and 2802) are equal to, and in many cases surpass the most stringent known international standards.

HIGH-VOLTAGE FEEDER AND MACHINE CABLES

The armoured high-voltage, feeder and machine cables manufactured to AS/NZS 1972 are primarily designed for use in specific applications in underground mines, but many are suitable for other above-ground or general mining applications.

  • Type 1 PVC insulated machine cables
  • Type 2S rubber insulated and screened machine cables
  • Type A and B 1.1kV/1.1kV rubber insulated cables for feeder applications
  • XLPE insulated armoured 11kV and 22kV power cables with defined conductance of screens
  • Paper insulated 11kV/11kV belted power cables with defined conductance of armour
