Bestech Australia Offers Fibre-Optic Sensors for Mining / Civil Engineering

Monday, October 11, 2010 by Bestech Australia

Bestech Australia, a specialist in sensors and measurement instrumentation, now distributes fibre-optic sensors from the European company Fiber Sensing.

These sensors are based on optical fibre Bragg grating (FBG) technology, which is considered the most suitable and reliable technology for long-term sensing and structural health monitoring, having become the natural substitute for all conventional technologies available. This allows the development of advanced monitoring systems in markets such as civil and geotechnical engineering, power generation and distribution, railway and transportation, aerospace, and oil and gas.

Currently, fibre optic sensors are used for measuring strain, temperature, acceleration, tilt and pressure, as well as measurement units and software packages. These sensors have all the advantages that are attributed to FBG technologies, namely:

  • High multiplexing capability
  • Long-distance transmission
  • EMI / RFI immunity
  • Electric isolation
  • Signal integrity
  • Long-term stability

Additionally, the technology reveals an inherent serial multiplexing capacity and an ability to provide absolute measurements without the need for referencing. This means that these fibre-optic sensors show excellent performance in hazardous environments and provide long-term reliability.
